4 Men Executed in Karaj Alcohol Poisoning Case

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); October 23, 2024: State media have reported the execution of four unnamed men for charges of efsad-fil-arz (corruption on earth) in Karaj Penitentiary.

According to the judiciary’s Mizan news agency, four men were executed in Karaj Penitentiary (Central Prison) on 23rd October. The unnamed men were sentenced to death for charges of “efsad-fil-arz through crimes against people’s physical integrity by distributing dangerous toxic substances (industrial alcohol methanol) at public level to produce and distribute alcoholic beverages, resulting in death and extensive bodily harm (17 deaths and 191 poisoning).”

There were 11 defendants in the case, with the four who had knowledge of the poisoning receiving death penalties and seven others who were unaware each receiving 29 year custodial sentences.

In 2023, at least 39 people were executed on charges of moharebehefsad-fil-arz and baghy. Those executed on security charges include members of opposition groups and religious and ethnic minorities.
