Mehrdad Irvani Hanged for Drug Offences in Qom

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 10, 2025: Mehrdad Irvani, a man on death row for drug-related offences, was executed in Qom Central Prison. With the previously reported executions, four people were hanged at the prison that day.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a man was hanged in Qom Central Prison on 3 September 2025. His identity has been established as Mehrdad Irvani from Qom. He was arrested three years ago and sentenced to death on drug-related charges.

IHRNGO previously reported the group hanging of three Afghan relatives named Rouhollah Hakemi (father), Nezam Hakemi (son) and Allahbakhsh Mirjahani (Nezam’s maternal uncle), bringing the total number of executions at the prison to four that day.

At the time of writing, his execution has not been reported by domestic media or officials in Iran.

Drug-related executions have continuously risen every year since 2021. According to IHRNGO’s 2024 Annual Report on the Death Penalty, at least 503 people were executed for drug-related charges, of which only under 3% were announced by official sources. 17% of all drug-related executions in 2024 were Baluch minorities while they represent 2-6% of Iran’s population. At least 426 people were executed for drug-related offences in the first eight months of 2025.
