19 Political Prisoners on Hunger Strike in Qarchak Women’s Prison

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); September 30, 2025: 19 political prisoners held in Qarchak Prison have begun a hunger strike today. They were among the 61 female political prisoners previously held in the women’s ward of Evin Prison, who were forcibly transferred to Qarchak by the authorities after Israel’s attack on Evin on 23 June 2025. 56 of the 61 female political prisoners are still being held in Qarchak’s quarantine section and, unlike other prisoners, do not even have access to the regular wards. This is while conditions in the regular wards themselves have been described as dire and inhumane. In recent days, at least three female prisoners including a political prisoner have died as a result of being deprived of medical treatment.

According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, a group of 19 political prisoners begun a wet hunger strike in Qarchak Prison on 30 September 2025.

An informed source told IHRNGO: “There are serious problems with illness and access to medical care. They force you to wear a hijab and socks to walk from the entrance gate to the infirmary, a very short distance. They have cut off children’s visitation under various pretexts.”

The source added that the water in Qarchak Prison is salty and undrinkable. Prisoners have to buy drinking water from the prison shop. The water is so contaminated that it is not even suitable for washing and some prisoners have developed gynaecological infections as a result.

The source further said that the political prisoners are held in an enclosed space with no windows or ventilation: “We don’t get enough oxygen so people are always feeling unwell. Prisoners in other wards can go to the infirmary on their own, we have to wait for a guard to escort us. We don’t have direct access to the workshop or the gym.”

Demanding the release of all political prisoners, their initial request is to be transferred back to Evin Prison where they had previously been provided with minimal facilities and means to endure their imprisonment.
