MOHAMMAD MOSTAFAEI, LAWYER OF SEVERAL MINORS ON THE DEATH ROW, WAS RELEASED AFTER BEING TAKEN INTO CUSTODY TODAY

Iran Human Rights, May 5: According to sources in Iran, the human rights lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei was taken into custody for about an hour today.

According to these sources, Mr. Mostafaei was taken into custody this morning when he tried to contact the spokesperson of the Iranian judiciary in order to halt the scheduled executions of two minor offenders in Tehran.

Mr. Mostafaei was released about an hour later. We have no further information about the reason why he was taken into custody for.

Mohammad Mostafaei is defence lawyer of about 20 minor offenders on the death row. In a letter published yesterday on his personal blog, Mostafaei wrote that

Spokesperson of Iran Human Rights, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, said " We are very concerned about the safety of Mr. Mostafaei and all other lawyers and human rights defenders working against death penalty to minors in Iran".

He added: "The Iranian civil society that has been involved in the struggle to save minors on the death row, needs support of the world community".

Amiry-Moghaddam also said "We hope UN and all countries with ties with Iran do whatever they can to bring an end to execution of minors in Iran. But first tomorrow’s scheduled execution of Amir Khaleghi and Safar Angooti must be halted".
