Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); 31 March 2026: Early morning air strikes on nearby military sites by Israel and the United States caused damage to Isfahan Central Prison this morning. Subsequent protests by prisoners were violently suppressed by security forces.
According to information obtained by Iran Human Rights, early morning air strikes carried out by Israel and the US on 31 March have caused damage to Isfahan (Dastgerd) Central Prison.
An informed source told IHRNGO that the targeted site was the Isfahan ballistic missile complex overlooking Mount Soffeh, located near the prison. Quoting a relative of one of the prisoners, the source said: “There was fire from above and gunfire from below. All the prison windows were shattered. Prisoners protested and special forces entered the prison to suppress them.”
The source further alleged that the authorities are deliberately exposing political prisoners to danger, stating that they are being held in conditions that place their lives at risk and are not being released or granted furlough despite the ongoing conflict.
A second source reported that the intensity of the strike near the prison was such that there is a possibility that several prisoners may have been killed. IHRNGO has not been able to independently verify these reports.
Asadollah Jafari, Head of Judiciary in Isfahan province, denied that any missile or bomb had struck Isfahan Central Prison, stating that all prisoners were safe.
Numerous images of heavy air strikes carried out in Isfahan in the early hours of 31 March have circulated on social media, with the ballistic missile complex and military ammunition depots reported to be among the targets.
Since the onset of Israeli and US military attacks on Iran on 28 February 2026, several prisons, detention centres and areas in close proximity to them have been struck, heightening concerns regarding the safety and protection of detainees under wartime conditions.
