Baluch Political Prisoner Abdoljalil Shahbakhsh Executed

Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO); 12 May 2026: State media reported that Abdoljalil Shahbakhsh, a Baluch political prisoner affiliated with Ansar al-Furqan, was executed. His self-incriminating forced confessions were also aired.

Condemning the execution of Abdoljalil Shahbakhsh, IHRNGO once again warns about the increasing execution of political prisoners, the use of forced confessions and unfair judicial proceedings in security-related cases, and calls for an immediate reaction from the international community.

According to the judiciary's Mizan News Agency, Abdoljalil Shahbakhsh, a Baluch political prisoner, was hanged at an unspecified location on 12 May. He was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court on charges of baghy "through armed attacks on police stations and membership in the baaghy group Ansar al-Furqan,” which was subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court.

According to the official report, Abdoljalil, also known as Shakib, had been arrested in connection with “armed attacks on police stations” during the nationwide "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests in 2022 and had allegedly acted as a “route clearer and reconnaissance force” in several operations. State media also aired his forced self-incriminating confessions. No further information is available about his case.

The implementation of death sentences had first been largely halted following the start of US and Israeli military attacks against Iran on 28 February 2026. However, since 18 March, at least 14 protesters, 11 political prisoners affiliated with banned opposition groups, five people charged with espionage, five people convicted on drug-related charges and 15 convicted of murder, have been executed.

Another Baluch political prisoner, Amer Ramesh, was executed on 26 April on charges of baghy (armed rebellion) through membership in Jaysh al-Adl and the Baloch Justice Seekers Movement. Abdoljalil Shahbakhsh is the eleventh political prisoner to be executed on charges related to membership in banned opposition groups since the start of the war.
