On 28 December 2025, nationwide protests began in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar over economic hardship and quickly turned into protests against the Islamic Republic. On 8 January 2026, the authorities shut down the internet and carried out an unprecedented mass-killing of protesters using military-grade weapons.
